From training grounds across India to the vibrant streets of Lisbon, a spirited group of 17 Indian runners is all set to participate in one of Europe’s most iconic and scenic races—the Lisbon Half Marathon 2025, which took place on March 9, 2025. This historic race, which unfolds against the stunning backdrop of the 25 de Abril Bridge, is more than a sporting event; it’s a cultural celebration and a proud moment for Indian representation in global distance running.
For over a decade, Active Holiday Company (AHC)—India’s leading expert in marathon tourism—has been the driving force behind helping Indian runners travel to some of the world’s most sought-after races. Combining seamless on-ground arrangements with hard-to-get race entries, and curated cultural experiences, AHC has created unique ‘run-cations’ that combine sport, travel, and community spirit.
Part of the globally renowned SuperHalfs Series, which rewards runners who complete a circuit of six of Europe’s most popular Half Marathons, the Lisbon Half Marathon attracts elite athletes and recreational runners from over 100 countries. Known for its picturesque route, the race offers participants the rare opportunity to run across the famous 25 de Abril Bridge, with panoramic views of the Tagus River, and experience Lisbon’s rich history and warm hospitality along the way.
Welcoming the Indian contingent Puneet R. Kundal, Ambassador of India to Portugal, said, “I am delighted to welcome the 17 marathon runners from India who are carrying with them a message of health and well-being. Their presence is also an indicator of the intense people-to-people relations that exist between India and Portugal. They carry the message of peace and friendship in this year that celebrates 50 years of India-Portugal bilateral relations.”
Running global races has captured the imagination of Indians and since 2022, AHC reports a 50% increase year on year in the number of Indians travelling to run marathon events around the world. They hail from all parts of India, many travelling solo, joining the larger ‘India Contingent’ put together by AHC. From pre-race meetups to cheerleading en route with the tricolour and the post-event celebrations, the experiences are curated to create familiarity, unity and camaraderie under the Indian umbrella.
“Running is about personal goals, but international races offer something bigger—a chance for an amateur athlete to represent their country on a universal platform,” says Gauri Jayaram, Founder & Director, Active Holiday Company. “We are proud to help Indian runners not only race in spectacular destinations like Lisbon but also feel supported, celebrated, and part of a global running family. These shared experiences, both on and off the racecourse, turn every run into a story worth telling.”
With marathon tourism booming in India, more runners are choosing to travel the world, not just to see new places, but to run through them. As these 17 runners cross the Lisbon finish line this Sunday, they will carry with them not just a medal, but the pride of representing India on the global running map—a moment of personal victory and a celebration of India’s growing footprint in global sports tourism.
