Experience

Two Oceans Marathon History since 1970 . The Two Oceans Marathon is the Africa’s biggest running event by economic impact, contributing R672 million annually to the Western Cape economy. It has earned a reputation as the world’s most beautiful marathon. The first race was held in 1970 and saw 26 runners line up to face the unknown challenge. Since then, the race has become a national institution and a firm favourite with local, upcountry, and international athletes. Participants consistently vote it as one of the best in South Africa and it continues to attract strong fields and an increasing number of international entrants.

The Two Oceans Marathon, South Africa’s best loved road race, is often voted the most breathtaking course in the world due to the natural splendour of the course. Highlights include Chapman’s Peak, Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Constantia and Newlands. Held on Saturday, 13 April 2024 (Ultra) and 14th April 2024 (Half Marathon).

    Two Oceans Ultramarathon, Cape Town

The highlight of my running career. Though I had completed several marathons, I had never run an ultramarathon before — nor had I been to South Africa. Active Travels made everything so much easier, organising not just flights and accommodation (just 300m from the race starting point!) but also airport pick-up and a tour of the Cape Peninsula. Magic from start to finish.

The ah-ha moment on the trip

    1. The sublime beauty of the scenery — two oceans, rugged cliff-face roads, and forested mountain territory. 2. The extraordinary camaraderie of race participants and crowds. This country is still healing from the wounds of apartheid, but for the duration of the race, black, brown and white runners were all working with each other (and even, in my case, singing and dancing with each other).

    Feedback on the trip guide

The guide — Adolf — was knowledgeable, funny, and kind.

Tips for future travellers for this trip

The expo the day before the race was a poorly organised mess. We spent three hours standing in the sun because of hold-ups at the expo venue. Travellers should be advised to bring a hat, a warm jacket (Cape Town can be cool at this time of year), and if possible a folding stool. Three hours standing is not good for an ultramarathon runner’s legs!

Other miscellaneous information that can help future travellers

The Newlands hotel was perfectly located and the staff are wonderfully kind. There is an Indian restaurant attached to the hotel, which is good for runners coming from the subcontinent. The tour of the Cape is utterly worth it. The day after the event, the legs need the minimal walking the tour demands in order to recover.
